Lovely staff and knowledgeable volunteer guides. Interesting displays and exhibition. Pretty little medieval herb garden. Can buy tickets for tours of Durham Castle and souvenirs of Durham/gifts there.

We stubbled across this, so glad we did. The lady was very informative. Showing us and a group facts about Durham on a 3d map. Which really helped us.

Boat Trips & Excursions - if available

Prince Bishop River Cruises

The Boat Ho/Elvet Bridge, Durham DH1 3AF, UK – 0191 386 9525

Interesting and excellent service. With friendly welcoming staff. I really would recommend it with a voucher! Would have enjoyed more river but didn't seem that it was accessible for the boat.

Lovely visit. Too quite at the back especially if people are talking. Bit more information would be even more great. Lovely times not too quick or too short. Old cruise but still clearly works well. You get the option to have beverages on board of you want and you can pay on the cruise or on the Groupon deal.

Local Parks & Gardens

Wharton Park

10 Princes' St, Durham DH1 4UF, UK – 0300 026 0000

1st visit since the refurbishment and will certainly come again. 2 separate play areas for toddlers and older children plus an area with outdoor exercise machines for adults. Lots of activities arranged throughout the summer and would love to come back and listen to the grass band. The cafe is a welcome improvement and serves a range of sandwiches cakes and not and cold drinks at fair prices. Great view of the castle and cathedral and of passing trains.

Lovely little park with plenty to keep anyone busy. Old buildings, outdoor gym, miniature golf, mini car track and play park for big kids and even a decent toddlers park. Cafe and toilets on site, food it good and surprisingly not that badly priced. Parking is available but not a lot, it is however pretty cheap at about £1.50 for a couple hours if I remember correctly.

Old Durham Gardens

Durham DH1 2RY, UK – 0191 384 1558

Very pleasant, cosy outer garden with a long flower bed, lots of roses and a lovely orchard from special apple trees. It is perfectly nested between the woods and the river and there is not even a door that would separate the gardens from the nature, so you feel so free there. Since there is no entrance fee, our family regularly goes back to relax whenever we are nearby. The walled garden is open during its shorter opening times, were they are growing a formal garden with old species.

Lovely place with nice people running it, watchout for the limited opening hours.

Durham University Botanic Garden

South Rd, Durham DH1 3TN, UK – 0191 334 2887

Quiet and silence. Good place to walk every time.

Beautiful views, with a family friendly attitude. Fantastic place to go with the family. Plenty of interesting things to see and various routes to take around the Gardens

Great website!. Click below to find gardens open during the year around Durham or County Durham. There are photos and lots of detail about the garden.
